Shipping Your Motorcycle
If you’re looking to ship your motorcycle, whether you’re moving, selling, or even just visiting a new place, you’ll need to find a reputable auto transport company to get your bike from point A to point B. Before you send your motorcycle off, make sure it’s prepared for transport. Take a look at these tips to help get you ready for your motorcycle transport.
Preparing Your Motorcycle for Transport
The first step you should take when preparing your motorcycle for transport is to do a thorough examination for any pre-existing damage. Take photos and make yourself familiar with any scratches, dents or imperfections on your bike so that you can make sure it wasn’t damaged in transit. After you’ve completed your thorough inspection make sure to do the following:
- Clean your entire motorcycle
- Note down any chips, dings, or scratches and their location.
- Take pictures of your bike from several angels
- Date all of your records, and make sure to show them to the transporter when they arrive.
In some cases your transport company may suggest you draining your gas tank and removing your battery prior to shipping, unless you are shipping by freight. In most cases, transport companies recommend a half or quarter tank of gas, charged battery, and inflated tires, check with your transport company to see what they recommend.
Remember to remove all loose items from your motorcycle, as these items will not be covered if they are lost or damaged while in transit. If you’re concerned about your bikes safety during shipping, you can request to have it be individually crated. You may also block and brace the bike while inside a container, insuring it will not tip or slide during the move. You may want to keep in mind that shipping a vehicle during the summer can cost a significant amount more than in the winter. Do some research on motorcycle transport costs before you sign on the dotted line.
